FAQs

What is Buhurt? Buhurt is a full-contact armored combat sport inspired by medieval fighting. Fighters wear protective armor and use historically inspired weapons while competing under established rules.

Do I need to know how to fight? Not at all! Beginners are welcome and can learn the fundamentals before participating in full-contact combat. Beginners typically need 3+ months of training before fighting steel on steel in armor for their first time at an event.

Do I need my own armor immediately? No. You don’t need to show up with a full suit of armor. New members can learn what equipment they need and work toward building their kit over time.

Is Buhurt safe? Like any contact sport, Buhurt carries a risk of injury. Proper equipment, training, safety rules and experienced supervision are important parts of every practice and event.

Do I have to fight to be part of the team? No! We also have opportunities for photographers, videographers, social media creators, merchandise helpers, volunteers and supporters. Bring your skills and we will make room!

Where do you practice? We practice at J. Lee Vause Park on Saturdays from 9 AM - 11AM. Check out our Calendar page or social media for the current schedule and location.

How much does it cost to join? River Raiders membership is currently $15 per month, once you’re an established member. For first-timers, you are given a one-month free trial to see if the Tallahassee River Raiders is the place for you! Additional costs may apply for events, competitions, registration or personal equipment.

What should I wear to my first practice? Comfortable athletic clothing and shoes are recommended. Bring plenty of water and be ready to move!

What are the Tallahassee Valkyries? The Tallahassee Valkyries is our sister team and Florida’s largest women's Buhurt team that fight and practice in conjunction with the Tallahassee River Raiders.

Where can I see the River Raiders fight? We participate in local events, demonstrations, competitions and community events throughout North Florida. Follow our event calendar and social media for upcoming appearances.

How do I start Buhurt? The easiest way to start is to just show up! Come to a practice, meet the team, and see what Buhurt is all about. No experience or armor is required to get started. If you’re interested in fighting, you can learn the fundamentals and gradually work your way into sparring at your own pace. If fighting isn’t for you, there are plenty of ways to get involved as a squire, volunteer, supporter, photographer, or part of our event and media team. There’s a place for everyone!
